Here is a letter that I (Kandice) received from Aunt Jill Graham.
In talking with Dad on the phone about a week and a half ago we somehow got on the subject of reverence of children during Sacrament Meeting at church.
Dad related the following incidence: This happened while we were still in the Albany, Oregon Second Ward and I would guess it was before the church went to the 3 hour block program, so I would guess sometime in the mid to late 1970’s.
One Sunday as the ward was gathered for Sacrament Meeting Jim and Jay along with 4-6 other young men of age between 12-18 were sitting on a front side pew in the chapel waiting to pass the sacrament to the congregation. Some sort of confrontation, joke, snide remark between them, or a comment from one of the other boys sent the two of them to start tussling with one another. This evidently went on for several minutes and was not coming to an end. No one sitting close to them ask them to stop nor did they do so on their own! The skirmish between them soon became bothersome enough to Dad that he got up and went up to sit between the two of them. While there he had a nice little chat with them about their reverence during church and how it was not just affecting them but was also a distraction to many in the congregation; such actions were not appropriate especially during church. Dad commented that he never had to do that again! Dad’s not sure whether it was more embarrassing for him or for the boys but it cured the problem.
